I enjoy the black and white look of Sgraffito, the whimsical look of mono printing and the painted look with underglazes. Most of what I do is cone 6 stoneware but I also enjoy making Raku, both horse hair and glazed. My studio is in my barn which is shared with 1 pony and 2 alpaca and usually my 2 dogs. My art extends to other mediums as well and so in anticipation of my retiring from a long nursing career we built an artisan gallery on our farm property in 2019. Chris Roberts was elected as the Chief Councillor of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in 2018. A lifelong resident of the Wei Wai Kum community, Chief Roberts earned his Economics Degree from the University of Victoria in 2008. In his role as Elected Chief, he focuses on various responsibilities, including economic development initiatives, treaty and self government negotiations, and the management of resources within the territory. Barry Penner, KC is Chair of the Energy Futures Institute, which was launched in 2023 with the goal of refreshing the conversation on important energy issues. Emchayiik Robert J. Dennis Sr. served as Chief Councillor for Huu-ay-aht First Nations from 2015 to 2023, and from 1995 to 2011. During his time in office Robert successfully negotiated the Maa-nulth Final Agreement with Canada and B.C., leading Huu-ay-aht to become a Modern Treaty Nation. Ken Watts
Chief Councillor, Tseshaht
Ken was born and raised in Port Alberni in Tseshaht First Nation territory and has lived most of his life in the community. He is the eldest son of the late George Watts and his mother is Matilda Atleo (now married to Cliff Atleo). He has three beautiful children Tristan, Noelani and Kailand.
In 2007 waamiiš completed a Bachelor of Arts in First Nations Studies from Vancouver Island University and went on to become the BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) Male Youth Representative where he also served as co-chair of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Youth Council. During this time Ken was also employed with the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC) coordinating a large aboriginal youth conference and supporting in youth and sports.
Elected as Vice-President of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) in 2012, Ken went on to serve the fourteen member First Nations for five years.
waamiiš was elected as a Council member serving a three year term (2017-2020) and then re-elected to a four year term in December of 2020. Tseshaht Council appointed Ken as the Elected Chief Councillor and he is looking forward to serving the Tseshaht First Nation.

Mary Chudley is the Director of Health and Support Services at Cool Aid Community Health Centre (CHC). The CHC has an 80-member team of inter-disciplinary providers including medical and allied health professionals. The team provides primary and addictions care to over 7000 patients at over 20 locations, including embedded clinics in sheltering sites.
Mary has had 20 years experience in the CHC sector, health services and health consulting. Her years in Ontario, working for the Ontario Association of CHCs in operational planning, engagement and advocacy for the CHC model of care. She holds a Master’s in Health Administration.

Courtney (Ti’yuqtunat) is a member of the Stz’uminus First Nation on Vancouver Island and is also of Scottish and Danish decent. Courtney started her career almost 20 years ago working with Indigenous families in the city of Nanaimo.
Moving into organizational development and strategic planning as a consultant in 2016, Courtney primarily worked in the field of interdisciplinary care in child and youth and mental health and substance use supported with a Masters of Arts in Leadership and a certificate in mediation.
Courtney first started working with First Nations Health Authority in 2018. During the completion of her doctorate studies, Defriend became more passionate about Indigenous research and moved into serving as the Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange.
Additionally, Courtney is a board director for the Nanaimo Division of Family Practice.

Campbell Woike is a 3rd generation farmer from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. Poultry is his family’s primary farming operation, but they also operate a CFIA licensed Egg Grading Station and market and sell 100% of the eggs they produce from their 70,000 laying hens as well as other farms on the Island. His family also has 300 acres of field crops and a small 50-head cow-calf operation. Campbell is a graduate of Olds College – Agriculture Management Diploma with a major in finance. He is the chair of the Vancouver Island Egg Producers Association and sits on the BC Egg Producers Association and production management committee. At 23 he is the youngest member and Vice chair of BC Young Farmers.

Mansher Bhinder is a Manager in the Supply Chain and Network Operations advisory practice at Deloitte Canada. Carl is the Director of Research Operations and Industry Engagement for VIU. He has had the opportunity to work in aquaculture, fishing, logging, sawmilling, pulp and paper, mining and many other industries on Vancouver Island. Brian has worked in the tourism industry for more than 20 years in progressive roles across multiple organizations and now leads the team delivering work to serve First Nations, residents, and tourism businesses throughout the Vancouver Island Region. Previously he worked for the GReater Victoria Harbour Authority, tartanbond, and Destination British Columbia.

Mike Carter is the Vice President of Operations with the Port Alberni Port Authority. Prior to joining the Port Authority in 2009 Mike worked in the Helicopter Logging Industry for 21 years; managing operations throughout Coastal and Interior British Columbia. After spending much of his life in remote logging camps he transitioned to the Port Authority to manage their 4 Marinas and a 250-site campground. After performing various roles, Mike was appointed to VP of Operations in January 2022. The duties of this role include overseeing the shipping terminals, seafood processing plant, marinas and a campground as well as designation of Port Security Officer.
Peter Charles is the Human Resources Consultant for the Vancouver Island/Gulf Islands region with go2HR - the Health, Safety and HR Association for BC’s tourism & hospitality industry. Emchayiik Robert J. Dennis Sr. served as Chief Councillor for Huu-ay-aht First Nations from 2015 to 2023, and from 1995 to 2011. During his time in office Robert successfully negotiated the Maa-nulth Final Agreement with Canada and B.C., leading Huu-ay-aht to become a Modern Treaty Nation. He developed and implemented Huu-ay-aht’s Economic Development Strategy, including Huu-ay-aht’s 35% ownership interest in C̕awak ʔqin Forestry, a timberlands business on the west coast of Vancouver Island. After completing her studies in biology, Jill went on to start Synergy Enterprises in 2008 to support business and industry shift towards a low carbon future. In 2013, she additionally launched Synergy Foundation, since then Jill continues to balance her roles as CEO for Synergy Enterprises and ED. Jill can often be found spearheading Synergy Foundation’s expansion projects, sharing her knowledge with the entrepreneurs in our incubator program, and transporting hundreds of seed starts for FED’s various food security initiatives. In her down time Jill can be found exploring Vancouver Island with her chocolate lab.
Dyan is the incoming Co-Chair of the Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice and the Vice President of the Gabriola Health Care Foundation. Her career has spanned 25 years in the BC Public Service with senior management positions in the Ministries of Health, Child and Family Development, and Women’s Equality and over 20 years as a management consultant focusing on strategic planning and public engagement. Dyan’s PhD research (political science, human geography, and sociology) examines how citizens are activated to find solutions to critical issues in their communities. She focuses her work on harnessing the potential of communities to build capacity and resilience to improve health outcomes for all.
Scott Dutchak has more than 25 years of real estate experience including real estate development, asset management and portfolio strategies. Scott’s previous roles include TELUS Corporation where he led the corporate real estate, sustainability, and environment divisions and has held senior management positions with BCI (British Columbia Investment Management Corporation), several major real estate organizations, including three of North America’s largest investors, owners and managers of commercial real estate. Scott is a professional urban planner with membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners, and holds an MBA. Scott has been appointed as an independent director with the Surrey City Development Corporation, Songhees Development Corporation and is a member of Saanich’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee.
As the CEO of the Hospital Foundation, Barney is focused on growing the community’s philanthropic capacity to support the eventual build of a new patient tower for the Central/North Island Community. With over 30 years of fundraising experience in higher education and healthcare, Barney is fascinated by the transformative power of passionate people. Justin Filuk is the Director of Development for the Salient Group of Companies, a development firm specializing in heritage restoration and urban infill projects in Vancouver and Victoria. Dallas Gislason has driven transformative economic development projects in Canada and the USA over 20 years. Nature inspires me to create beautiful things. I started making pottery in 2010 and by 2012 I realized it was going to be a wonderful journey. I find working with clay to create functional and decorative pieces very satisfying. Creating different color palettes with the use of glazes, underglazes and stains allows me to make unique and interesting pieces. I enjoy the black and white look of Sgraffito, the whimsical look of mono printing and the painted look with underglazes. Most of what I do is cone 6 stoneware but I also enjoy making Raku, both horse hair and glazed. My studio is in my barn which is shared with 1 pony and 2 alpaca and usually my 2 dogs. My art extends to other mediums as well and so in anticipation of my retiring from a long nursing career we built an artisan gallery on our farm property in 2019. Before joining Western, Seanna worked in Indigenous Relationships for BC Hydro and in treaty negotiations on Vancouver Island on behalf of the federal government.

Yuho Okada is the President of Barkley Project Group. Consultant Katherine Palmer Gordon has worked in intergovernmental relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments and communities for more than thirty-five years, both in New Zealand and in Canada. Originally a corporate lawyer, she is also a former Chief Negotiator for B.C. and Crown Chief Negotiator in New Zealand. She lives and works on the unceded homelands of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. Katherine has also written eight award-winning non-fiction books in Canada. Her most recent book, This Place is Who We Are: Stories of Indigenous Leadership, Resilience and Connection to Homelands (Harbour, 2023) explores the interconnection of place, people and wellbeing.
Brenda Patrick, founder of Vancouver Island HeartBeatz acknowledges the essential role of economic resilience and sustainability for remote communities and their small enterprises. Barry Penner, KC is Chair of the Energy Futures Institute, which was launched in 2023 with the goal of refreshing the conversation on important energy issues. Mr. Penner served as BC’s Minister of Environment, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Attorney General during his four terms as an elected member of the British Columbia legislature. Dorian's journey began with a background in Mechanical Engineering, where he first developed a passion for distilling and built his first still during college. Chris Roberts was elected as the Chief Councillor of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in 2018. A lifelong resident of the Wei Wai Kum community, Chief Roberts earned his Economics Degree from the University of Victoria in 2008. Dr. Deborah Saucier was appointed President and Vice-Chancellor of Vancouver Island University in July 2019. Dr. Saucier holds a PhD in psychology from the University of Western Ontario and a BSc and MSc in psychology from the University of Victoria. She received her International Baccalaureate diploma from the Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in Metchosin, near Victoria.

Chatman Shaw is from Prince Rupert BC, with ancestry rooted in Northern BC as a member of the Nisga’a Nation community of Gitlaxt’aamiks branching all the way down south to the Tsleil Waututh Nation in North Vancouver, BC. With over 15 years of experience in the tourism and hospitality industry & a degree in Business Management. Chatman joined Indigenous Tourism BC last summer as the Corporate Services Manager.
Raised in Chemainus BC, Landon now resides in Nanoose Bay with his wife and daughters. He spent the past 20 years in the construction industry, 14 of which were operating a traditional contracting company. Six years ago he co-founded ‘aux box’, a modern modular home company in Parksville, BC. Aux box products can be found all over Vancouver Island; as far east as Niagara Falls ON, and as far south as L.A. California. He enjoys building quality relationships as much as he does building aux boxes.

Rahul is a research and innovation expert who has served BC’s life sciences sector for over 15 years. He works closely with industry, academic, and government organizations representing key economic sectors to advance innovation for actionable and impactful community-centric outcomes. He leads BCCAI to support the agriculture and agri-food sectors in developing and adopting technology solutions to solve pressing challenges, such as climate change. Cyrus Singh is the CEO of KEDC (Kawatsi Economic Development Corporation), the economic arm of the Gwa’sala Nakwaxda’xw Nation. Under his leadership the Nation has made significant strides toward achieving its economic vision. KEDC is the largest employer located in Northern Vancouver Island with over 250 employees comprised of 40% indigenous employment.

Mark is the CEO of the Pacific Seaweed Industry Association. A sixth-generation Vancouver Island farmer, Ross Springford is the owner-operator of Springford Farm in Nanoose Bay where he lives and farms with his wife Erin and his two young sons. Ken was born and raised in Port Alberni in Tseshaht First Nation territory and has lived most of his life in the community. He is the eldest son of the late George Watts and his mother is Matilda Atleo (now married to Cliff Atleo). He has three beautiful children Tristan, Noelani and Kailand.
In 2007 waamiiš completed a Bachelor of Arts in First Nations Studies from Vancouver Island University and went on to become the BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) Male Youth Representative where he also served as co-chair of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Youth Council. During this time Ken was also employed with the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC) coordinating a large aboriginal youth conference and supporting in youth and sports.
Elected as Vice-President of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) in 2012, Ken went on to serve the fourteen member First Nations for five years.
waamiiš was elected as a Council member serving a three year term (2017-2020) and then re-elected to a four year term in December of 2020. Tseshaht Council appointed Ken as the Elected Chief Councillor and he is looking forward to serving the Tseshaht First Nation.
Ian Welle wakes up thinking about refrigeration plants, energy efficiency, and carbon reductions. Over the last decade, Ian has honed his experience by working for the International Olympic Committee on two different Olympics, on 5 different continents, and for more than 60 recreation centers in Western Canada. This experience has allowed him to partner with local municipalities to secure more than 30 million in grant funding and engineer energy recovery systems which have reduced his client's carbon footprint by more than 6000 tons of CO2.

Kathy Whitcher brings over 30 years of experience in urban planning and development management. Born and raised in Vancouver, Kathy started her planning career with the City of Vancouver’s Planning Department in 1989.
Kathy currently works for the Urban Development Institute-Capital Region as Executive Director where she has held her position for the past 13 years. In her role as Executive Director, she is responsible for the direction, growth and management of the organization and its members. Under Kathy’s direction, UDI Capital Region has grown from a small, one-person run office to a flourishing multi-staff office and where she has more than doubled their corporate membership.
Kyle is the Director of Education with Co-operatives First, where he leads the development and delivery of start-up support services and training for Co-operatives First. Originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, Kyle has worked his way across Canada, focusing on community economic development in rural and Indigenous communities. With degrees in Geography and Public Policy, Kyle’s educational background has focused on community development, corporate governance, and public policy. She was then the CEO of the healthcare association management arm of Vancouver's StemCell Technologies, the largest biotechnology company in Canada.
As a management consultant and executive coach for the last ten years, Ashka has provided strategy support to small and medium-sized private sector businesses, to nearly every BC ministry; and to not-for-profit organizations across Canada.

Campbell Woike is a 3rd generation farmer from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. Poultry is his family’s primary farming operation, but they also operate a CFIA licensed Egg Grading Station and market and sell 100% of the eggs they produce from their 70,000 laying hens as well as other farms on the Island. His family also has 300 acres of field crops and a small 50-head cow-calf operation. Campbell is a graduate of Olds College – Agriculture Management Diploma with a major in finance. He is the chair of the Vancouver Island Egg Producers Association and sits on the BC Egg Producers Association and production management committee. At 23 he is the youngest member and Vice chair of BC Young Farmers.
Gil Yaron is Managing Director of Circular Innovation at Light House, a Vancouver-based organization dedicated to advancing circular and regenerative practices in the built environment. Gil leads the Building Material Exchange (BMEx) program on Vancouver Island serving to capture excess and salvaged building materials and provide them as valuable resources to local manufacturers and other businesses. He is also an advisor on circular economy to the Municipality of North Cowichan’s Economic Development Action Plan. Gil holds a Master of Laws from UBC and brings more than 30 years of experience in the circular economy, sustainable procurement and entrepreneurship.
