Mike Carter is the Vice President of Operations with the Port Alberni Port Authority. Prior to joining the Port Authority in 2009 Mike worked in the Helicopter Logging Industry for 21 years; managing operations throughout Coastal and Interior British Columbia. After spending much of his life in remote logging camps he transitioned to the Port Authority to manage their 4 Marinas and a 250-site campground. After performing various roles, Mike was appointed to VP of Operations in January 2022. Robert Maylath is the Director of Partnerships & Engagement at Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET), a multi-partner initiative led by the University of Victoria. He has 20 years experience in building partnerships and engaging communities across the world to advance social and economic development, climate adaption, and the appropriate use of technology to scale impact.
Seanna McConnell is Vice President, Indigenous Partnerships, and joined Western in 2016. She leads a small team working to advance new business partnerships and deepen engagement with First Nations across Western's operations. Before joining Western, Seanna worked in Indigenous Relationships for BC Hydro and in treaty negotiations on Vancouver Island on behalf of the federal government.
Growing up primarily on Vancouver Island, Jason’s work career is focused on the port, trade and transportation and logistics industry. Jason recently earned an MBA in Executive Management and a certificate in Asia Pacific Trade and Investment from Royal Roads University. Starting within an administrative role on shipping terminals, then progressing to vessel cargo and cruise ship operations and transitioning into an executive as the Vice President of Business Development role at the Port of Nanaimo. Currently, he is engaged with the Provincial and Federal governments, community groups, and industry stakeholders to bring visibility to Nanaimo’s future potential in trade, transportation, and tourism.
Merissa is a passionate entrepreneur and co-founder of Tree Island Yogurt. Together with her husband, Scott DiGuistini PhD, Merissa started Tree Island in 2013 at the Comox Valley Farmers Market and has since grown their manufacturing business into a 33,000sq ft CFIA License dairy facility with distribution to serve grocers across Canada. Merissa has a passion for land stewardship and brings her unique background in community economic development to the food industry.
Andrew Nixon is the Public Affairs & Communications Manager (formerly Business Development Manager) at K'awat'si Economic Development Corporation (KEDC), bringing over 10 years of experience in digital marketing and business development. Since moving to Port Hardy in 2022, he has supported the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations through KEDC's various business lines, ensuring each project aligns with the cultural values and environmental stewardship goals of the Nation. Andrew also plays a key role in supporting food security and reconciliation initiatives and serves on both the VINTAS and VINTAC committees, supporting the Regional District of Mount Waddington.
Yuho Okada is the President of Barkley Project Group. In addition to engaging in his executive management role, Yuho has over 10 years of hands-on experience in project management, including project development, financing, strategic planning, economic analysis, and business planning for numerous clean energy projects in BC and Yukon. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Conservation from the UBC and a MBA from Royal Roads University. He served as a chair of the Board of Directors for Clean Energy BC over the last 6 years, and is currently appointed as the Board Secretary.
Consultant Katherine Palmer Gordon has worked in intergovernmental relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments and communities for more than thirty-five years, both in New Zealand and in Canada. Originally a corporate lawyer, she is also a former Chief Negotiator for B.C. and Crown Chief Negotiator in New Zealand. She lives and works on the unceded homelands of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. Katherine has also written eight award-winning non-fiction books in Canada. Her most recent book, This Place is Who We Are: Stories of Indigenous Leadership, Resilience and Connection to Homelands (Harbour, 2023) explores the interconnection of place, people and wellbeing.
Brenda Patrick, founder of Vancouver Island HeartBeatz acknowledges the essential role of economic resilience and sustainability for remote communities and their small enterprises. The launch of the Vancouver Island App represents a proactive measure aimed at assisting community members, business proprietors, and those who contribute to advancement.
Having resided in remote communities has proven to be a significant blessing for Brenda, providing her with numerous opportunities.
In 2018, she participated in the Municipal Election and was elected as a councillor. During her tenure, she achieved several successes, notably serving respectfully on the executive committee of the Vancouver Island Regional Library. This experience highlighted the critical importance of economic resilience and sustainability for remote communities and their small businesses.
Barry Penner, KC is Chair of the Energy Futures Institute, which was launched in 2023 with the goal of refreshing the conversation on important energy issues. Since then, Energy Futures Institute has drawn public attention to BC Hydro dependence on imported electricity to meet more than 20% of domestic requirements and the need to increase and diversify electricity generation in the province.
Mr. Penner served as BC’s Minister of Environment, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Attorney General during his four terms as an elected member of the British Columbia legislature. As Minister of Environment, Mr. Penner introduced BC’s first climate action plan which included North America’s first revenue-neutral carbon tax.
Ramtin is a leader in the electrical and energy sectors, specializing in clean technologies across utilities, oil and gas, and the marine industry. His expertise covers innovations in renewable energy systems and energy storage solutions. Ramtin has guided technology projects from concept to manufacturing, aligning business needs with technical solutions. He excels in building teams, developing strategies for technology adoption, and driving decarbonization initiatives.
Ramtin holds MSc degrees in Power Systems and Power Electronics, and a PhD in hybrid energy resources. He is recognized as a Canada's Clean50 Emerging Leader and a Forty Under 40 awardee.
Dorian's journey began with a background in Mechanical Engineering, where he first developed a passion for distilling and built his first still during college. After that, he dedicated eight years to refining his manufacturing expertise in the hearth industry, specializing in the design of high-end gas fireplaces. It was during this time that he sharpened his understanding of thermodynamics, a skillset that would later prove invaluable in crafting an eco-conscious distillery.

Dr. Deborah Saucier was appointed President and Vice-Chancellor of Vancouver Island University in July 2019. Dr. Saucier holds a PhD in psychology from the University of Western Ontario and a BSc and MSc in psychology from the University of Victoria. She received her International Baccalaureate diploma from the Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in Metchosin, near Victoria.
At Vancouver Island University, Dr. Saucier has guided the development and implementation of the institution’s first strategic plan. The plan includes three core values – People, Place and Potential – and six commitments for the next five years. Following the guidance of the plan, Dr. Saucier is working to build on the institution’s strengths and fostering the unique educational experience at VIU to be more accessible, more inclusive, and more deeply rooted in community.
Chatman Shaw is from Prince Rupert BC, with ancestry rooted in Northern BC as a member of the Nisga’a Nation community of Gitlaxt’aamiks branching all the way down south to the Tsleil Waututh Nation in North Vancouver, BC. With over 15 years of experience in the tourism and hospitality industry & a degree in Business Management. Chatman joined Indigenous Tourism BC last summer as the Corporate Services Manager.

We now share our story with the world by sharing the one resource which has been with us every step of the way. Rahul is a research and innovation expert who has served BC’s life sciences sector for over 15 years. He works closely with industry, academic, and government organizations representing key economic sectors to advance innovation for actionable and impactful community-centric outcomes. He leads BCCAI to support the agriculture and agri-food sectors in developing and adopting technology solutions to solve pressing challenges, such as climate change. He holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology, a mini-MBA from UBC and entrepreneurship training from Beedie School of Business at SFU. A staunch advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Rahul enjoys mentoring the next generation of scientists and entrepreneurs.
Mansher Bhinder is a Manager in the Supply Chain and Network Operations advisory practice at Deloitte Canada. He has extensive experience in designing and managing end to end supply chain and led many greenfield and brownfield infrastructure projects for O&G, Nuclear, Energy, Defence and Manufacturing industry. He has domestic and international track record in conduction supply chain assessment, market assessment, designing operating strategy and roadmap development to alleviate larger supply chain challenges both regional and global.
Mansher holds MEng in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University.
Mark is the CEO of the Pacific Seaweed Industry Association. He is a past board member and Chair of the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance (VIEA), where he still chairs the Foreign Trade Zone and Invest Vancouver Island (FTZVI) initiative. In addition, he served on the BC Minister of Agriculture's Advisory Group on Regenerative Agriculture and Agritech (MAGRAA) and currently serves on the Board of Small Business BC.
Mayor Michelle Staples served seven years on Duncan City Council before being elected to her first term as Mayor in 2018, becoming the first woman to serve in that position.
She works as the Executive Director of Social Planning Cowichan and has been involved in community development in the Cowichan Valley for well over 20 years with a significant amount of work dedicated to Reconciliation, Climate Change, Equity and Justice issues.
She sits on several boards and committees filled with people working together committed to doing what they can to apply solutions to some of the most unprecedented challenges faced in our lifetime. She truly believes that the only way forward is working together where we can achieve anything if we have the openness to listen, the willingness to try and the courage to lead.
Aaron Stone is the CEO of the South Island Prosperity Partnership (SIPP), Greater Victoria's economic development alliance. With over 25 years in business development, technology, and public service, Aaron is a champion of holistic community prosperity.
As the former Chairperson of the Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICET), Aaron led initiatives to foster regional economic development and collaboration between First Nations, local governments, and industry. His efforts were instrumental in securing a $10 million provincial investment to empower coastal communities and transform ICET into the first co-governed regional development organization in Canada.
In local government, Aaron served three terms as Mayor of the Town of Ladysmith and as Chair of the Cowichan Valley Regional District, where he focused on sustainable economic growth and community well-being. His leadership and vision have been pivotal in driving business success and fostering a resilient regional economy.
Naomi Tabata is the Director of Envision North Island, which includes responsibility for the Centre for Applied Research, Technology and Innovation at North Island College, where NIC’s talented faculty and students connect with community businesses and organizations to create meaningful and mutually beneficial applied research projects. North Island College’s research areas of strength are varied and include aquaculture (and specifically seaweed), indigenous language, health care, and technology. Naomi has over 20 years of experience specializing in project management and grant-writing for post-secondary and non-profit organizations. She is also currently preparing a business case to support student housing at the Campbell River campus. She serves on several community and professional committees and is a passionate advocate for community development, education and healthy communities. She holds an undergraduate degree in biology from UBC and a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University.

Having discovered a passion for storytelling to a crowd when she was seven years old, Janel is an avid public speaker and was named senior champion of the 2023 Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture competition. In her free time, you can find her reading a good mystery novel or playing with her dog, Rex.
Sam Vermeulen is the owner and founder of Hazel's Ice Cream. He is passionate about making products that resonate with people and bring moments of joy. Previously working as a flower farmer, he started Hazel's Ice Cream in 2020 with his father. Since then, the company has grown from a solar powered cart in Victoria to distributing across Western Canada. Ken was born and raised in Port Alberni in Tseshaht First Nation territory and has lived most of his life in the community. He is the eldest son of the late George Watts and his mother is Matilda Atleo (now married to Cliff Atleo). He has three beautiful children Tristan, Noelani and Kailand.
In 2007 waamiiš completed a Bachelor of Arts in First Nations Studies from Vancouver Island University and went on to become the BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) Male Youth Representative where he also served as co-chair of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Youth Council. During this time Ken was also employed with the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC) coordinating a large aboriginal youth conference and supporting in youth and sports.
Elected as Vice-President of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) in 2012, Ken went on to serve the fourteen member First Nations for five years.
waamiiš was elected as a Council member serving a three year term (2017-2020) and then re-elected to a four year term in December of 2020. Tseshaht Council appointed Ken as the Elected Chief Councillor and he is looking forward to serving the Tseshaht First Nation.
Joel has over 25 years of operational management, infrastructure delivery, and consulting experience spanning multiple industries.
He has spent the last 19 years in the port industry, managing port operations, equipment acquisitions, and terminal expansions.
Currently holding the role of Chief Operating Officer for DP World in Canada, his responsibilities include leading the strategic execution of all Canadian operations.

Kathy Whitcher brings over 30 years of experience in urban planning and development management. Born and raised in Vancouver, Kathy started her planning career with the City of Vancouver’s Planning Department in 1989.
Kathy currently works for the Urban Development Institute-Capital Region as Executive Director where she has held her position for the past 13 years. In her role as Executive Director, she is responsible for the direction, growth and management of the organization and its members. Under Kathy’s direction, UDI Capital Region has grown from a small, one-person run office to a flourishing multi-staff office and where she has more than doubled their corporate membership.
Brian has worked in the tourism industry for more than 20 years in progressive roles across multiple organizations and now leads the team delivering work to serve First Nations, residents, and tourism businesses throughout the Vancouver Island Region. Previously he worked for the GReater Victoria Harbour Authority, tartanbond, and Destination British Columbia.
Brian holds three degrees from the University of Victoria, including his MBA. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the UVIC Board of Governors. He is a proud member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and one-half of a two-dad family.
Kyle is the Director of Education with Co-operatives First, where he leads the development and delivery of start-up support services and training for Co-operatives First. Originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, Kyle has worked his way across Canada, focusing on community economic development in rural and Indigenous communities. With degrees in Geography and Public Policy, Kyle’s educational background has focused on community development, corporate governance, and public policy. Aside from his work with Co-operatives First, Kyle stays busy as a volunteer, history enthusiast, and long-distance runner.
Gaby Wickstrom is the General Manager, Operations & Business Development, with the ‘Namgis Business Development Corp. Having lived in Port McNeill for 29 years, her business and political background have made her keenly aware of the issues rural communities face. She has always been a community and region advocate, who recognizes the power of working together to overcome challenges.
Gaby has served as Mayor and Councillor of Port McNeill, and held leadership roles including Past President of the Port McNeill & District Chamber of Commerce, board member with the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance, Director-at-Large on the Union of British Columbia Municipalities executive committee, and Chair of the Vancouver Island Regional Library board.
Michael is a Founding Partner and CEO of Cascadia Seaweed. Michael has had a long relationship with the sea. Born in Halifax, he proudly served in the Royal Canadian Navy for over thirty years. He had a number of shore-based, sea-going (under-sea) and overseas postings, culminating with three years as Commander of Canada’s west coast Naval Base. In the last ten years, he has been an entrepreneur and leader of a number of marine oriented companies encompassing energy, security, education and the environment. Michael brings this experience, along with a BSc (Math/Physics) and an MBA, to his current role.
Ashka Wirk, BSc, MBA, CMC, ACC is the Principal of Wirk Consulting. She is a seasoned private sector leader. She began her career as head of Business Development with an Okanagan biotechnology firm. She was then the CEO of the healthcare association management arm of Vancouver's StemCell Technologies, the largest biotechnology company in Canada.
As a management consultant and executive coach for the last ten years, Ashka has provided strategy support to small and medium-sized private sector businesses, to nearly every BC ministry; and to not-for-profit organizations across Canada.
She has a particular focus on helping founders and their teams create tailored succession plans to ensure their businesses thrive beyond the founding generation, through an approach called SuccessionReady.
Campbell Woike is a 3rd generation farmer from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. Poultry is his family’s primary farming operation, but they also operate a CFIA licensed Egg Grading Station and market and sell 100% of the eggs they produce from their 70,000 laying hens as well as other farms on the Island. His family also has 300 acres of field crops and a small 50-head cow-calf operation. Campbell is a graduate of Olds College – Agriculture Management Diploma with a major in finance. He is the chair of the Vancouver Island Egg Producers Association and sits on the BC Egg Producers Association and production management committee. At 23 he is the youngest member and Vice chair of BC Young Farmers.
Gil Yaron is Managing Director of Circular Innovation at Light House, a Vancouver-based organization dedicated to advancing circular and regenerative practices in the built environment. Gil leads the Building Material Exchange (BMEx) program on Vancouver Island serving to capture excess and salvaged building materials and provide them as valuable resources to local manufacturers and other businesses. He is also an advisor on circular economy to the Municipality of North Cowichan’s Economic Development Action Plan. Gil holds a Master of Laws from UBC and brings more than 30 years of experience in the circular economy, sustainable procurement and entrepreneurship.
