Through her work at Synergy Foundation, Georgia works with entrepreneurs, existing businesses, regional government, and community stakeholders to foster the transition to a circular economy in BC. Georgia is also the lead on the annual Project Zero Incubator Program and the Circular Accelerator Program.

Janel is the founder of 100 Kids for Change Oceanside, a youth-run philanthropy organization with the mission of spreading positive change by giving back to local charities. A Grade 12 homeschool student

from Nanoose Bay, Janel loves first chapters, discovering new ideas, creating things, and learning about our world. Having discovered a passion for storytelling to a crowd when she was seven years old, Janel is an avid public speaker and was named senior champion of the 2023 Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture competition. In her free time, you can find her reading a good mystery novel or playing with her dog, Rex.

Gil Yaron is Managing Director of Circular Innovation at Light House, a Vancouver-based organization dedicated to advancing circular and regenerative practices in the built environment. Gil leads the Building Material Exchange (BMEx) program on Vancouver Island serving to capture excess and salvaged building materials and provide them as valuable resources to local manufacturers and other businesses. He is also an advisor on circular economy to the Municipality of North Cowichan’s Economic Development Action Plan. Gil holds a Master of Laws from UBC and brings more than 30 years of experience in the circular economy, sustainable procurement and entrepreneurship.

With over 15 years of experience in Broadcast Journalism, Public Relations, and Communications, Blaise Hunter is a dynamic force in the business sector. Known for her unique insights and passion, she brings a fiery energy to every project she undertakes. As the founder of the Women of Influence Nanaimo Awards, Blaise orchestrated an inaugural event that drew over 620 attendees, earning the title of Event of the Year for the Mid-Island. An EDI expert specializing in reproductive health rights and a multi-award-winning philanthropist, she is dedicated to championing social justice and empowering underrepresented voices.

Mansher Bhinder is a Manager in the Supply Chain and Network Operations advisory practice at Deloitte Canada. He has extensive experience in designing and managing end to end supply chain and led many greenfield and brownfield infrastructure projects for O&G, Nuclear, Energy, Defence and Manufacturing industry. He has domestic and international track record in conduction supply chain assessment, market assessment, designing operating strategy and roadmap development to alleviate larger supply chain challenges both regional and global.  

Mansher holds MEng in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University.

Sandy Gerber is a Professional Speaker, Communication Trainer, and award-winning Author. For 25 years Sandy revitalized communications for companies of all sizes, including many of Canada's most beloved brands.

As CEO of NEXT Marketing Agency, she set a new standard for innovative communications, growing her company from a bedroom startup into a Top 100 Fastest Growing Companies in BC.

A successful communicator, Sandy was a female executive leader in three male dominated industries (heavy equipment, tech & finance). She’s founded three successful companies and is the visionary behind the Magnetic Communication training products and podcast. Her book Emotional Magnetism has won over 20 awards and is available now in 3 languages. 

Dorian's journey began with a background in Mechanical Engineering, where he first developed a passion for distilling and built his first still during college. After that, he dedicated eight years to refining his manufacturing expertise in the hearth industry, specializing in the design of high-end gas fireplaces. It was during this time that he sharpened his understanding of thermodynamics, a skillset that would later prove invaluable in crafting an eco-conscious distillery.

Brenda Patrick, founder of Vancouver Island HeartBeatz acknowledges the essential role of economic resilience and sustainability for remote communities and their small enterprises. The launch of the Vancouver Island App represents a proactive measure aimed at assisting community members, business proprietors, and those who contribute to advancement.

Having resided in remote communities has proven to be a significant blessing for Brenda, providing her with numerous opportunities.  

In 2018, she participated in the Municipal Election and was elected as a councillor. During her tenure, she achieved several successes, notably serving respectfully on the executive committee of the Vancouver Island Regional Library. This experience highlighted the critical importance of economic resilience and sustainability for remote communities and their small businesses. 

David Leverton is President of Leverton & Associates Ltd. and has been providing management consulting services to government, NGO’s, and not-for-profit organizations for 30+ years. In late 2022 the company embarked on a new business enterprise creating and distributing strategy-based, tabletop board games, that are hands-on, interactive, environmentally sustainable, and most of all, fun to play. Their first game release is called Dice Hockey™ Challenge (dicehockey.com) and is modelled after Canada’s national winter sport. The new game is available throughout parts of Canada and plans are underway to release the game into the United States and Europe. Their second tabletop board game is currently under development. David and his wife, Anne Doyle, are building their new board game business in Courtenay where they have lived for many years.

Nature inspires me to create beautiful things. I started making pottery in 2010 and by 2012 I realized it was going to be a wonderful journey. I find working with clay to create functional and decorative pieces very satisfying. Creating different color palettes with the use of glazes, underglazes and stains allows me to make unique and interesting pieces. I enjoy the black and white look of Sgraffito, the whimsical look of mono printing and the painted look with underglazes. Most of what I do is cone 6 stoneware but I also enjoy making Raku, both horse hair and glazed. My studio is in my barn which is shared with 1 pony and 2 alpaca and usually my 2 dogs. My art extends to other mediums as well and so in anticipation of my retiring from a long nursing career we built an artisan gallery on our farm property in 2019. Susan has a deep understanding of the regional dynamics of British Columbia’s economy, the factors that affect the economy of Vancouver Island and how it differs from other regions of the province.

Brodie is the CEO of Island Coastal Economic Trust, the regional development organization working for Vancouver Island and coastal communities that strategically invests in inclusive economic development and innovation.

Brodie serves on several boards focused on sustainable development, Indigenous leadership, and environmental stewardship including as chair of the $200 million Blueberry River Restoration Society, B.C.’s $100 million Watershed Security Fund, the Circle on Philanthropy, the US/Canada Commission for the transboundary Skagit Watershed, and more. Previously, Brodie was the CEO of one of the world’s largest Indigenous-led conservation finance and sustainable development funds, Coast Funds, where he worked in the Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii for a decade. Brodie lives in K’omoks First Nation territory where he and his partner are raising three children.

JOHN ALAN JACK, traditional name Sayaač̓atḥ, is in his fifth term as a Member of Council, returning as Chief Councillor for the Huu-ay-aht First Nations (HFN). With experience in treaty related matters and administration predating his election, John has extensive knowledge and expertise in matters of Huu-ay-aht law, governance practices, administrative systems and overall corporate memory. He has a breadth of experience in working with various local, provincial, federal governments and businesses of all sizes.

Recently, he has been appointed to the Board of Governors for VIU. He also serves as Vice Chair for the Island Coastal Economic Trust. He is also a Board Member and Chair for the Gathering Voices Society, where focus is given on bridging the modern and the traditional methods of land and natural resource management practices.

Aaron Stone is the CEO of the South Island Prosperity Partnership (SIPP), Greater Victoria's economic development alliance. With over 25 years in business development, technology, and public service, Aaron is a champion of holistic community prosperity.

As the former Chairperson of the Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICET), Aaron led initiatives to foster regional economic development and collaboration between First Nations, local governments, and industry. His efforts were instrumental in securing a $10 million provincial investment to empower coastal communities and transform ICET into the first co-governed regional development organization in Canada.

In local government, Aaron served three terms as Mayor of the Town of Ladysmith and as Chair of the Cowichan Valley Regional District, where he focused on sustainable economic growth and community well-being. His leadership and vision have been pivotal in driving business success and fostering a resilient regional economy.

Brian has worked in the tourism industry for more than 20 years in progressive roles across multiple organizations and now leads the team delivering work to serve First Nations, residents, and tourism businesses throughout the Vancouver Island Region. Previously he worked for the GReater Victoria Harbour Authority, tartanbond, and Destination British Columbia.

Brian holds three degrees from the University of Victoria, including his MBA. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the UVIC Board of Governors. He is a proud member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and one-half of a two-dad family.

Tyson ?ikaatius Atleo is a hereditary Chief-in-line of the Ahousaht First Nation, and the Natural Climate Solutions Program Director for Nature United. Raised with the principles of Heshook-ish Tsawalk, meaning "everything is one," Tyson is dedicated to upholding the values of respect, care, love, and teaching in all of his work. He is deeply committed to advancing conservation of the natural environment, and the spiritual, social, and economic well-being of Indigenous peoples.

Vickey is grateful to serve the legendary Village of Cumberland on the unceded territory of the K’ómoks Nation.

Her background includes Environmental Studies and Political Science at UVic, SFU's Community Economic Development Certificate Program and a Public Leadership Credential with the Harvard Kennedy School. Governance roles included non profit and social enterprise models and cooperatives, and 6 years on her Credit Union Board and currently a director for Island Coastal Economic Trust.

Vickey’s focus on community resilience is what brought her to local government in 2014 and continues to drive her work in fostering thriving, connected communities.

Chatman Shaw is from Prince Rupert BC, with ancestry rooted in Northern BC as a member of the Nisga’a Nation community of Gitlaxt’aamiks branching all the way down south to the Tsleil Waututh Nation in North Vancouver, BC. With over 15 years of experience in the tourism and hospitality industry & a degree in Business Management. Chatman joined Indigenous Tourism BC last summer as the Corporate Services Manager.

Seanna McConnell is Vice President, Indigenous Partnerships, and joined Western in 2016. She leads a small team working to advance new business partnerships and deepen engagement with First Nations across Western's operations. Before joining Western, Seanna worked in Indigenous Relationships for BC Hydro and in treaty negotiations on Vancouver Island on behalf of the federal government.

Chris Roberts was elected as the Chief Councillor of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in 2018. A lifelong resident of the Wei Wai Kum community, Chief Roberts earned his Economics Degree from the University of Victoria in 2008. In his role as Elected Chief, he focuses on various responsibilities, including economic development initiatives, treaty and self government negotiations, and the management of resources within the territory. Chief Roberts serves on multiple corporate boards associated with his Nation and regional partnerships. He is married to a member of the We Wai Kai Nation and is the proud father of two children.

Ben is a climate and sustainability professional with 15 years of experience across business, government and non-profits. As the Director of Green & Circular Economy Services with Delphi, he leads a range of projects to support clients in navigating challenges and opportunities within the green economic transformation. Recent work has included a Watershed Sector Roadmap, analyses of circular opportunities in construction and tourism, and developing sustainable finance and risk-related guidance for financial institutions. Prior to Delphi he spent 10 years with the Province of BC working in climate action and economic development.

Dallas Gislason has driven transformative economic development projects in Canada and the USA over 20 years. On Vancouver Island, he co-founded the South Island Prosperity Partnership (SIPP) in 2016, which grew from 29 to over 70 stakeholder organizations, united to build a diverse & sustainable Greater Victoria economy. Dallas later co-founded COAST (Centre for Ocean Applied Sustainable Technologies), which is developing Pacific Canada’s sustainable Blue Economy through a supportive innovation ecosystem. Dallas has served on numerous boards and received numerous accolades for his work. He holds a Masters of Global Management and several certifications in economic development and organizational performance.

Mayor Michelle Staples served seven years on Duncan City Council before being elected to her first term as Mayor in 2018, becoming the first woman to serve in that position.  

She works as the Executive Director of Social Planning Cowichan and has been involved in community development in the Cowichan Valley for well over 20 years with a significant amount of work dedicated to Reconciliation, Climate Change, Equity and Justice issues. 

She sits on several boards and committees filled with people working together committed to doing what they can to apply solutions to some of the most unprecedented challenges faced in our lifetime. She truly believes that the only way forward is working together where we can achieve anything if we have the openness to listen, the willingness to try and the courage to lead.

Dr. Lindsay Frehlick is the Director of Research Services at Vancouver Island University. She facilitates and supports VIU’s scholarship, research, and creative activities by providing management and leadership for research services (pre- and post-award support and researcher development). Lindsay holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Victoria and has 13 years of research administration experience specializing in research partnerships and innovation management. She is passionate about advancing translational and community-engaged research that impacts society.

Carl is the Director of Research Operations and Industry Engagement for VIU.  He has had the opportunity to work in aquaculture, fishing, logging, sawmilling, pulp and paper, mining and many other industries on Vancouver Island.  He has been a consultant to industry and has worked in higher education for the last 18 years.  In addition to his work facilitating applied research solutions for industry, he is privileged to work with many First Nations on economic development and food security initiatives.

Robert Maylath is the Director of Partnerships & Engagement at Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET), a multi-partner initiative led by the University of Victoria.  He has 20 years experience in building partnerships and engaging communities across the world to advance social and economic development, climate adaption, and the appropriate use of technology to scale impact.

Naomi Tabata is the Director of Envision North Island, which includes responsibility for the Centre for Applied Research, Technology and Innovation at North Island College, where NIC’s talented faculty and students connect with community businesses and organizations to create meaningful and mutually beneficial applied research projects. North Island College’s research areas of strength are varied and include aquaculture (and specifically seaweed), indigenous language, health care, and technology. Naomi has over 20 years of experience specializing in project management and grant-writing for post-secondary and non-profit organizations. She is also currently preparing a business case to support student housing at the Campbell River campus. She serves on several community and professional committees and is a passionate advocate for community development, education and healthy communities. She holds an undergraduate degree in biology from UBC and a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University.

Paul, Co-Founder of Yeshi is a knowledge seeking entrepreneur at heart, but ended up in the IT field for 15 years. In 2017 his wife, Barbara and he started Yeshi Foods. Yeshi Foods is a food manufacturer that makes unbelievably delicious gluten free foods. They are now partners with over 1300 retailers across Canada and working on the US market in 2024. Entrepreneurship is definitely his passion and will never look back. Other interests include, the outdoors and gardening, but most of all Jiu Jitsu & Business. 

Merissa is a passionate entrepreneur and co-founder of Tree Island Yogurt. Together with her husband, Scott DiGuistini PhD, Merissa started Tree Island in 2013 at the Comox Valley Farmers Market and has since grown their manufacturing business into a 33,000sq ft CFIA License dairy facility with distribution to serve grocers across Canada. Merissa has a passion for land stewardship and brings her unique background in community economic development to the food industry.

Stacey is a co-founder of Level Ground Coffee Roasters.  

The company engages globally with co-ops of small-scale farmers. 

Annually, Level Ground purchases the harvests of over 5,000 Family Farms and Roasts 1 million lbs. of Premium Coffee.

Sam Vermeulen is the owner and founder of Hazel's Ice Cream. He is passionate about making products that resonate with people and bring moments of joy. Previously working as a flower farmer, he started Hazel's Ice Cream in 2020 with his father. Since then, the company has grown from a solar powered cart in Victoria to distributing across Western Canada. One of Sam's favorite parts of owning a business is building community with the people he works with, adjacent businesses and organizations, and customers.

Jason Goldsworthy, P.Eng. is the Executive Director for the Centre for Applied Sustainable Technologies (COAST).

With over 20 years of international experience in managing engineering businesses and projects, Jason brings leadership, technical and commercial aptitude to the team.  His experience spans multiple industries including renewable energy, urban development, environmental consulting, mining, and commercial and infrastructure construction.

He has worked with large multinational corporations as well as being involved in several startups. He has acted on several corporate boards in both Canada and Australia.

Jason holds a PHD in Engineering from the University of Adelaide, Australia, and is a member of the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.

With a professional background in industrial mechanical design and personal background centered on the ocean, Sebastian leads Shifts technology development in autonomous systems in the Marine sector.  Key technology includes the OceanSled autonomous surface vessel (ASV) , which has recently become the first ever ASV in the Canadian Coast Guard fleet. Sebastian’s extensive previous experience in mechanical engineering includes cross border collaboration and delivery of complex, strategically sensitive systems. This, coupled with years of project management experience at remote worksites in BC’s backcountry, help him translate client needs into Shift Coastal Technologies’ development.

Mike Carter is the Vice President of Operations with the Port Alberni Port Authority. Prior to joining the Port Authority in 2009 Mike worked in the Helicopter Logging Industry for 21 years; managing operations throughout Coastal and Interior British Columbia. After spending much of his life in remote logging camps he transitioned to the Port Authority to manage their 4 Marinas and a 250-site campground. After performing various roles, Mike was appointed to VP of Operations in January 2022. The duties of this role include overseeing the shipping terminals, seafood processing plant, marinas and a campground as well as designation of Port Security Officer.

Robin Li is the President of SEAMOR MARINE LTD., an executive with over 25 years of experience in the robotics technology sector, combining engineering expertise with business acumen. He co-founded SEAMOR Marine in 2006 and has successfully guided the company’s expansion into international markets as a provider of underwater technology solutions. Under his leadership, SEAMOR has expanded its presence across all continents and diversified its product offerings, focusing on solutions that enhance safety and operational efficiency for the industries it serves worldwide. His vision has positioned SEAMOR as a key player in the marine technology field.

Westley joined Island Health in 2021, and previously served as Chief Project Officer and Executive Director, Projects and Planning, Facilities Management with Vancouver Coastal Health; leading a number of complex projects, including the capital development plan for Vancouver General Hospital, further implementing significant transformative initiatives such as the Joseph and Rosalie Segal and Family Health Centre, UBC Renewal and Phase 1 of Vancouver General Hospital’s Operating Room Redevelopment.

Donna Hais is the Owner and General Manager of R. W. (Bob) Wall Ltd. A special focus of their projects the past number of years has been in the medical and dental community throughout Vancouver Island. In 2020, R. W. (Bob) Wall Ltd. won the Construction Leadership Award for Vancouver Island.

Donna is also the Owner and General Manager of Canadian Cache Development Corporation, a land development company which has been concentrating its efforts in creating a Hospital Campus in Nanaimo. This has been accomplished through the development of new infrastructure in and around the Hospital area, which is not strictly defined as medical offices, but rather answering the needs of a comprehensive Hospital Campus.

Currently, Donna acts as Chair of the Fair Care Alliance and Community Liaison for the MSA (Medical Staff Association) with respect to the conversation on a Tertiary Care Hospital in Nanaimo, servicing all patients North of the Malahat. Donna also sits at the Mayors Leaders Table and chairs the Infrastructure Task Force for this group.

Dr. Deborah Saucier was appointed President and Vice-Chancellor of Vancouver Island University in July 2019. Dr. Saucier holds a PhD in psychology from the University of Western Ontario and a BSc and MSc in psychology from the University of Victoria. She received her International Baccalaureate diploma from the Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in Metchosin, near Victoria.

At Vancouver Island University, Dr. Saucier has guided the development and implementation of the institution’s first strategic plan. The plan includes three core values – People, Place and Potential – and six commitments for the next five years. Mark Holland is an award winning Registered Professional Planner with degrees in Landscape Architecture and Planning.  He has had a diverse career including being a planner in the City of Vancouver and the City’s first Manager of its Sustainability Office, a planning consultant, a VP of Development for several real estate development companies, and a professor at Vancouver Island University.  He currently works with a wide diversity of landowners and developers across the Island confronting the challenges of developing housing.

Scott Dutchak has more than 25 years of real estate experience including real estate development, asset management and portfolio strategies. Scott’s previous roles include TELUS Corporation where he led the corporate real estate, sustainability, and environment divisions and has held senior management positions with BCI (British Columbia Investment Management Corporation), several major real estate organizations, including three of North America’s largest investors, owners and managers of commercial real estate. Scott is a professional urban planner with membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners, and holds an MBA. Scott has been appointed as an independent director with the Surrey City Development Corporation, Songhees Development Corporation and is a member of Saanich’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee.

Russell has held senior positions with Intrawest Corporation, Bentall Kennedy LP & Royal Bay Community Partnership LP, and holds a B.Sc. (Honours) in Land Management & Development from the University of Reading.

Through Island Places Property Corp, Russell provides management & consulting services pertaining to envisioning & strategic business planning; land planning & approvals; and development generally, with a focus single-family &multi-family residential & mixed-use projects.

Russell lives in Comox and is a director on the Comox Valley Community Foundation.

Justin Filuk is the Director of Development for the Salient Group of Companies, a development firm specializing in heritage restoration and urban infill projects in Vancouver and Victoria. Justin’s nearly 20 years of experience includes a full spectrum of projects from boutique condos to master planned communities as well as commercial, hotel and public sector role with BC Housing delivering non-market housing.  Over the last few years, Justin has overseen the development of notable large-scale projects including Townline’s Hudson District and Starlight’s Spencer Lands in Langford BC. He is an active member of the local development community contributing to numerous industry committees and events and was served on the UDI Capital Region board of directors from 2014 to 2023.

Kathy Whitcher brings over 30 years of experience in urban planning and development management.  Born and raised in Vancouver, Kathy started her planning career with the City of Vancouver’s Planning Department in 1989. 

Kathy currently works for the Urban Development Institute-Capital Region as Executive Director where she has held her position for the past 13 years.  In her role as Executive Director, she is responsible for the direction, growth and management of the organization and its members. Under Kathy’s direction, UDI Capital Region has grown from a small, one-person run office to a flourishing multi-staff office and where she has more than doubled their corporate membership.

Rory is the CEO of the Vancouver Island Construction Association (VICA) and advocates on a variety of issues that affect the Vancouver Island construction industry particularly as it pertains to the commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-residential sectors. With a focus on the challenges and opportunities facing the industry, he supports initiatives and strategies that contribute to the overall health, wellness, and success of not only VICA’s member companies and workers, but ultimately all those that work in the construction industry.

Pat English, currently acting in a consulting role as the Manager of Economic Development for the Regional District of Mount Waddington, is a professional with over 30 years of experience with public and private economic development projects. Pat has a BA degree in Economics and an MBA in finance and marketing, both from the University of British Columbia. He has previously served as a Director of Economic Development for the Province of BC and has owned and operated his own hospitality businesses in Prince George and northern BC. He currently serves as a director for several non-profit organizations, including the Rural Island Economic Partnership and the Hopetown Community Development Society.

Andrew Nixon is the Public Affairs & Communications Manager (formerly Business Development Manager) at K'awat'si Economic Development Corporation (KEDC), bringing over 10 years of experience in digital marketing and business development. Since moving to Port Hardy in 2022, he has supported the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations through KEDC's various business lines, ensuring each project aligns with the cultural values and environmental stewardship goals of the Nation. Andrew also plays a key role in supporting food security and reconciliation initiatives and serves on both the VINTAS and VINTAC committees, supporting the Regional District of Mount Waddington.

Mark is the CEO of the Pacific Seaweed Industry Association. He is a past board member and Chair of the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance (VIEA), where he still chairs the Foreign Trade Zone and Invest Vancouver Island (FTZVI) initiative. In addition, he served on the BC Minister of Agriculture's Advisory Group on Regenerative Agriculture and Agritech (MAGRAA) and currently serves on the Board of Small Business BC.

Gaby Wickstrom is the General Manager, Operations & Business Development, with the ‘Namgis Business Development Corp. Having lived in Port McNeill for 29 years, her business and political background have made her keenly aware of the issues rural communities face. She has always been a community and region advocate, who recognizes the power of working together to overcome challenges. 

Gaby has served as Mayor and Councillor of Port McNeill, and held leadership roles including Past President of the Port McNeill & District Chamber of Commerce, board member with the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance, Director-at-Large on the Union of British Columbia Municipalities executive committee, and Chair of the Vancouver Island Regional Library board.

Yuho Okada is the President of Barkley Project Group. In addition to engaging in his executive management role, Yuho has over 10 years of hands-on experience in project management, including project development, financing, strategic planning, economic analysis, and business planning for numerous clean energy projects in BC and Yukon. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Conservation from the UBC and a MBA from Royal Roads University. He served as a chair of the Board of Directors for Clean Energy BC over the last 6 years, and is currently appointed as the Board Secretary.

Barry Penner, KC is Chair of the Energy Futures Institute, which was launched in 2023 with the goal of refreshing the conversation on important energy issues. Since then, Energy Futures Institute has drawn public attention to BC Hydro dependence on imported electricity to meet more than 20% of domestic requirements and the need to increase and diversify electricity generation in the province.

Mr. Penner served as BC’s Minister of Environment, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Attorney General during his four terms as an elected member of the British Columbia legislature. As Minister of Environment, Mr. Penner introduced BC’s first climate action plan which included North America’s first revenue-neutral carbon tax.

Consultant Katherine Palmer Gordon has worked in intergovernmental relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments and communities for more than thirty-five years, both in New Zealand and in Canada. Originally a corporate lawyer, she is also a former Chief Negotiator for B.C. and Crown Chief Negotiator in New Zealand. She lives and works on the unceded homelands of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. Katherine has also written eight award-winning non-fiction books in Canada. Her most recent book, This Place is Who We Are: Stories of Indigenous Leadership, Resilience and Connection to Homelands (Harbour, 2023) explores the interconnection of place, people and wellbeing.

Carol Anne Hilton, MBA, ICD.D is the CEO and founder of the Indigenomics Institute, the Global Center of Indigenomics and the Global Indigenous Technology House. Carol Anne is a dynamic Indigenous national and international business leader, author, speaker, director, facilitator and senior adviser with an international Masters Degree in Business Management (MBA) from the University of Hertfordshire, England. Carol Anne is of Nuu chah nulth descent from the Hesquiaht Nation on Vancouver Island. Carol Anne is an award winning author of ‘Indigenomics- Taking A Seat at the Economic Table’ and is currently authoring a second book.

Carol Anne serves as a Director on the McGill University Institute for the Study of Canada, Earth Charter International, the Global Value Commission, Innovate BC, TELUS Indigenous Advisory Council, Move37XR, the Bank of Montreal Indigenous Advisory Council and the Honoring Nations Council in partnership with Fulbright Canada. Carol Anne previously served as a senior advisor on the Canadian Economic Growth Council, MITACS Research, the BC Emerging Economy Taskforce, the BC Digital Supercluster and the BC Indigenous Business and Investment Council.

Ken was born and raised in Port Alberni in Tseshaht First Nation territory and has lived most of his life in the community. He is the eldest son of the late George Watts and his mother is Matilda Atleo (now married to Cliff Atleo). He has three beautiful children Tristan, Noelani and Kailand.

In 2007 waamiiš completed a Bachelor of Arts in First Nations Studies from Vancouver Island University and went on to become the BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) Male Youth Representative where he also served as co-chair of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Youth Council. During this time Ken was also employed with the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC) coordinating a large aboriginal youth conference and supporting in youth and sports.

Elected as Vice-President of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) in 2012, Ken went on to serve the fourteen member First Nations for five years.

waamiiš was elected as a Council member serving a three year term (2017-2020) and then re-elected to a four year term in December of 2020. Tseshaht Council appointed Ken as the Elected Chief Councillor and he is looking forward to serving the Tseshaht First Nation.

Growing up primarily on Vancouver Island, Jason’s work career is focused on the port, trade and transportation and logistics industry. Jason recently earned an MBA in Executive Management and a certificate in Asia Pacific Trade and Investment from Royal Roads University. Starting within an administrative role on shipping terminals, then progressing to vessel cargo and cruise ship operations and transitioning into an executive as the Vice President of Business Development role at the Port of Nanaimo. Currently, he is engaged with the Provincial and Federal governments, community groups, and industry stakeholders to bring visibility to Nanaimo’s future potential in trade, transportation, and tourism. 

Thomas is a Registered Professional Planner (RPP) and CEO of the Island Corridor Foundation, which stewards a 289km linear infrastructure and utility corridor, connecting Victoria to Courtenay and Port Alberni. He is a cofounder of Vancouver's Centre for Social and Economic Innovation @ 312 Main and has been involved in major mixed use Transit Oriented Development projects with BC Housing that have been centred on indigenous partnerships and building complete communities for future generations. Thomas has a real estate and appraisal background and is keenly focused on how transportation infrastructure investments impact land values and how prosperity can be shared.

Mario Iacobacci is a Partner in the Economic advisory practice at Deloitte Canada. He has led a career at the intersection of economics, public policy and business strategy. He has an international track record in transportation and infrastructure economics, including business cases and cost-benefit analysis; feasibility analyses; infrastructure funding; cost-escalation analysis; labour market forecasts and expert witness work on economics and market issues. He has advised public sector agencies, institutional investors and corporate clients on multiple infrastructure projects in North America and Europe, covering all transportation modes including road, rail, marine, public transit, highways and freight rail. Ashka Wirk, BSc, MBA, CMC, ACC is the Principal of Wirk Consulting. She is a seasoned private sector leader. She began her career as head of Business Development with an Okanagan biotechnology firm. Additionally, I serve as Vice President on the board of the BC Indigenous Housing Society. Together, our team manages a portfolio of over 900 housing units, supporting more than 1,300 individuals and families. We prioritize affordable housing and community well-being in collaboration with government agencies.

My work is deeply rooted in a commitment to honoring Indigenous cultural values while addressing the needs of the communities we partner with. By focusing on both economic development and community leadership, I aim to contribute meaningfully to the growth and sustainability of Indigenous businesses and organizations.

Kim joined Nanoose Economic Development Corporation as CEO in September 2023. He brings with him 45 years of experience operating small businesses and managing business organizations including the establishment and operation of economic development functions during his 14 years with the Parksville & District Chamber of Commerce. Kim has served on numerous community boards and spent a term on Parksville City Council.

Kim views building relationships and working collaboratively as the pathway to successful economic enterprises.

Kim lives in Parksville with wife Kathleen, spoiled pug –Boss and is fortunate to have most of his children and grandchildren close in Parksville and Nanaimo

Cyrus Singh is the CEO of KEDC (Kawatsi Economic Development Corporation), the economic arm of the Gwa’sala Nakwaxda’xw Nation. Under his leadership the Nation has made significant strides toward achieving its economic vision. KEDC is the largest employer located in Northern Vancouver Island with over 250 employees comprised of 40% indigenous employment.

With over 20 years of experience in business development and analytics, his leadership has overseen the blending of cultural values with modern strategies to drive economic success in the region. He holds a Master’s Public Administration from Dalhousie University and Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Victoria.

Gary Wilson, a proud Haiɫzaqv Nation member, born and raised in Bella Bella, BC. Gary and his family are grateful for the Snuneymuxw and Snaw-naw-as First Nations for allowing them to live, work and play in their traditional territory on Vancouver Island for the last 28 years.

As Chief Executive Officer and Director of Economic Development of Tiicma Enterprises, a wholly owned company of the Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che:k:tles7et'h' First Nations, Gary provides strategic and operational oversight, planning, budgeting and technical guidance, advice and support to his Sr. Management team and staff.  

Recognizing our First Nation community’s rich history across this country included Nation-to-Nation Inter-tribal trade from a national and international perspective; Gary believes that by incorporating our Indigenous values and principals along with the best of modern day development practices, First Nations are well positioned to establish successful and sustainable opportunities to support national and international economic development partnership opportunities, creating sustainable socio-economic development for Indigenous citizens and the broader business community.

Dyan is the incoming Co-Chair of the Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice and the Vice President of the Gabriola Health Care Foundation. Her career has spanned 25 years in the BC Public Service with senior management positions in the Ministries of Health, Child and Family Development, and Women’s Equality and over 20 years as a management consultant focusing on strategic planning and public engagement. Dyan’s PhD research (political science, human geography, and sociology) examines how citizens are activated to find solutions to critical issues in their communities. She focuses her work on harnessing the potential of communities to build capacity and resilience to improve health outcomes for all. 

Mary Chudley is the Director of Health and Support Services at Cool Aid Community Health Centre (CHC).  The CHC has an 80-member team of inter-disciplinary providers including medical and allied health professionals. The team provides primary and addictions care to over 7000 patients at over 20 locations, including embedded clinics in sheltering sites.

Mary has had 20 years experience in the CHC sector, health services and health consulting. Her years in Ontario, working for the Ontario Association of CHCs in operational planning, engagement and advocacy for the CHC model of care.  She holds a Master’s in Health Administration.

Mary loves running long distances on the beautiful trails in South Vancouver Island, loves her family and good coffee! 

Courtney (Ti’yuqtunat) is a member of the Stz’uminus First Nation on Vancouver Island and is also of Scottish and Danish decent. Courtney started her career almost 20 years ago working with Indigenous families in the city of Nanaimo.

Moving into organizational development and strategic planning as a consultant in 2016, Courtney primarily worked in the field of interdisciplinary care in child and youth and mental health and substance use supported with a Masters of Arts in Leadership and a certificate in mediation.

Courtney first started working with First Nations Health Authority in 2018. During the completion of her doctorate studies, Defriend became more passionate about Indigenous research and moved into serving as the Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange. 

Additionally, Courtney is a board director for the Nanaimo Division of Family Practice. 

Courtney is a published author of children’s literature and enjoys spending time outdoors with her children, playing softball, and doing arts and crafts.

Jeff Malmgren has worked in collaborative practice, engagement process design and strategic leadership across multiple sectors for over two decades. Since 2012 he has worked extensively in primary care reform in communities across BC, supporting the development or Primary Care Networks and other initiatives with a particular focus on the integration of supports and services across the spectrum of health and wellbeing. His core tenet is built around the value of collectively-held community responsibility – one that creates communities that thrive at every level.

He continues to work at local, provincial and national levels and is also currently the president of the Gabriola Health Care Foundation.

I have had the privilege of working across multiple provinces, guiding healthcare administrators and practitioners to challenge traditional methods and innovate to improve programs and care delivery across the healthcare continuum. I currently serve the executive director for, community hospitals (centre/north island) and rural and remote care and strategy with Island Health.

I am a researcher within the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine, Community Health Sciences portfolio focusing research specific to health system quality and performance indicators targeting outcomes driven by community based care. My academic experience encompasses supporting academic research initiatives, evaluating new technologies, implementing system-wide quality improvement measures, enhancing innovative programs, developing community-focused analytic frameworks, formulating complex clinical and process policies, and leading full-scale system change.

Sherese Johnson, who grew up in Campbell River, BC, is a seasoned marketing communications professional with over 20 years of experience across corporate and non-profit sectors. Her passion for social enterprise drives her work, blending business acumen with a dedication to creating meaningful, community-focused impact. Sherese has a proven track record in brand strategy, public relations, stakeholder engagement, and social impact initiatives. She is committed to developing inclusive narratives and empowering others, particularly in fostering growth for local communities. Her expertise in digital marketing, media relations, and event planning makes her a dynamic leader in the field of communications.

Lauren Evanow is a dynamic leader and entrepreneur with a background in science and business. Holding a Master of Arts in Leadership, she founded Results Team Communication Inc., focusing on strategic planning for start-ups in digital technology and healthcare. Committed to using AI for societal benefit, she is interested in companies that address mental health and wellness as well as evidence-based research methods. Lauren serves as the founding director of the Consciousness and Healing Initiative (CHI.is). 

Jennifer Hufnagel is an accomplished corporate trainer, operations consultant, and AI Enthusiast. With a Bcom in Entrepreneurship from UVIC, she brings 25 years of experience as a Learning & Development Specialist and Business Consultant. Through her consulting practice, Hufnagel Consulting, she helps small to medium businesses, nonprofits, Fortune 100 companies, optimize their operations, adopt new technologies, and train their teams. At Innovation Island, Jennifer co-created the DER3 Program, which helped over 460 Vancouver Island businesses "Get Digital" and expanded to serve organizations across British Columbia. Jennifer is known for her energy, enthusiasm and strong ability to Get “Stuff” Done.

Charly Jarrett is a nonprofit digital strategy expert with a track record in leveraging AI to optimize online giving, advertising, and analytics. Specializing in nonprofit, Charly integrates AI tools to enhance productivity, streamline decision-making, and drive growth. Their expertise in behavioral science and the psychology of philanthropy informs a unique approach to AI adoption, helping organizations transform workflows while fostering positive community impact.

Rahul is a research and innovation expert who has served BC’s life sciences sector for over 15 years. He works closely with industry, academic, and government organizations representing key economic sectors to advance innovation for actionable and impactful community-centric outcomes. He leads BCCAI to support the agriculture and agri-food sectors in developing and adopting technology solutions to solve pressing challenges, such as climate change. He holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology, a mini-MBA from UBC and entrepreneurship training from Beedie School of Business at SFU. A staunch advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Rahul enjoys mentoring the next generation of scientists and entrepreneurs.

Chris Steel is the General Manager of The Old Farm Market, a locally owned and operated business dedicated to making accessibility and inclusivity a priority in all aspects of operation. With a leadership style centered around connection, Chris inspires both staff and customers by fostering an environment of collaboration and respect. His focus is always on the good of the group, ensuring that everyone feels valued and included. Chris is passionate about building strong relationships within the community, creating a welcoming space for all who visit The Old Farm Market.

Steve has been involved in the food industry for nearly 30 years, from small start-ups to international conglomerates. He has participated in a number of industry panels and is presently on the Board of the BC Salmon Marketing Council. His past roles include co-founder of Rumble beverages, General Manager of Albion Fisheries and he is presently the CEO of St. Jean’s Cannery. St. Jean’s is a first nations majority owned enterprise that produces seafood specialties and shelf stable products for their own brands and others.

Campbell Woike is a 3rd generation farmer from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. Poultry is his family’s primary farming operation, but they also operate a CFIA licensed Egg Grading Station and market and sell 100% of the eggs they produce from their 70,000 laying hens as well as other farms on the Island. His family also has 300 acres of field crops and a small 50-head cow-calf operation. Campbell is a graduate of Olds College – Agriculture Management Diploma with a major in finance. He is the chair of the Vancouver Island Egg Producers Association and sits on the BC Egg Producers Association and production management committee. At 23 he is the youngest member and Vice chair of BC Young Farmers. 

Nick is the Sales Director for Cermaq Canada overseeing the sales of fresh farmed salmon from our Canadian operation to customers all over the world. Their three key markets are the US, Canada and Japan however they also sell product into China and Taiwan. Nick has held his current position since 2007 but started his career in seafood in 1995, almost exclusively with Cermaq. He also worked in the wild sector for a company out of Alaska specializing in wild salmon and crab for 3 years. Cermaq is a global leader in responsible aquaculture specializing in salmonids with operations in Norway, Chile and Canada.    

Mike is a lifelong British Columbian. He has worked extensively in BC politics for premiers Gordon Campbell and Christy Clark, whom he served as Chief of Staff in the Premier's Office and campaign director for her re election in 2013. Today, Mike is a partner and Chief Strategy Officer at Kirk & Co, one of Canada's leading communications and public engagement firms.

Kate has nearly 20 years’ experience in public policy, advocacy, social impact and communications. She is the Vice President of Engagement at Vancouver Foundation, where she oversees teams leading learning, evaluation, communications, marketing and advocacy work. She started her career as a reporter covering breaking news for the New York Times and the Globe and Mail, winning awards for her feature writing and investigative work, and later served a senior advisor to the former Premier of Ontario.

Geoff Meggs has decades of experience at the provincial and municipal level in B.C., both as an elected official and at the senior executive level.

He was appointed chief of staff to Premier John Horgan in 2017 and remained in that post until Horgan retired from provincial politics in 2022. Before that, Geoff served three terms as a member of Vancouver City Council, where he chaired various city committees and represented the city on the Board of Metro Vancouver.

He held a range of senior communications roles in the labour movement, worked as chief of staff to Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell, served as executive director of the B.C. Federation of Labour, and as communications director to Premier Glen Clark.

The author of several books about B.C. fisheries and politics, Geoff lives in Vancouver.
